I Feel What You Feel: Empathy and Placebo Mechanisms for Autonomous Virtual Humans
نویسندگان
چکیده
Computational modeling of emotion, physiology and personality is a major challenge in order to design believable virtual humans. These factors have an impact on both the individual behavior and the collective one. This requires to take into account the empathy phenomenon. Furthermore, in a crisis simulation context where the virtual humans can be contaminated by radiological or chemical substances, empathy may lead to placebo or nocebo effects. Stemming from works in the multiagent systems domain, our virtual human decision process is designed as an autonomous agent. It has been shown that the environment can encapsulate the responsibility of spreading a part of the agent state. The agent has two parts, its mind and its body. The mind contains the decision process, and is the autonomous part of the agent. The body is influenced by the mind, but controlled by the environment. One may try to fly, it does not mean one can.

An appraisal theory of empathy and other vicarious emotional experiences.
Empathy, feeling what others feel, is regarded as a special phenomenon that is separate from other emotional experiences. Emotion theories say little about feeling emotions for others and empathy theories say little about how feeling emotions for others relates to normal firsthand emotional experience. Current empathy theories focus on how we feel emotions for others who feel the same thing, bu...

متن کاملEmpathy examined through the neural mechanisms involved in imagining how I feel versus how you feel pain.
Perspective-taking is a stepping stone to human empathy. When empathizing with another individual, one can imagine how the other perceives the situation and feels as a result. To what extent does imagining the other differs from imagining oneself in similar painful situations? In this functional magnetic resonance imaging experiment, participants were shown pictures of people with their hands o...
متن کاملWhat You Can See is What You Can Feel - Development of Visual/Haptic Interface to Virtual Environment
In this paper, we propose a new concept of visual/haptic interfaces called WYSIWYF display. The proposed concept provides correct visual/haptic registration using a visionbased object tracking technique and a video keying technique so that what the user can see via a visual interface is consistent with what he/she can feel through a haptic interface. Using Chroma Keying, a live video image of t...
متن کاملWYFIWIF: A Haptic Communication Paradigm For Collaborative Motor Skills Learning
Motor skills transfer is a challenging issue for many applications such as surgery, design and industry. In order to design virtual environments that support motor skills learning, a deep understanding of humans’ haptic interactions is required. To ensure skills transfer, experts and novices need to collaborate. This requires the construction of the common frame of reference between the teacher...
